Well,, the closest answer is in the quality, compression, and speed rate of  
what you are recording.. Yes sound waves can be manipulated. example: FROM  
MP-3, WAV, AIFF, CAF, BWF, FLAC, Ogg/Vorbis.

I hope that you understand me. another example: high definition sounds waves  
recording occupies more memory in the hard drive, sata or usb device is not  
as filming, but just audio. you have to read the help files in audio  
conversion you are making withing each program and search in the internet for  
more details.
