Thanks for your help!
Following the installer crash, I mounted the volume that should have had Trisquel on it, and found that my user had been created, and /usr/bin seemed to be partially populated. I noticed that, when looking at /etc/default/grub, I found the grub command field empty, and didn't really know what should be there. a run of the script called 'update-grub' resulted in an error message asking whether '/dev' is mounted. I gave up, and tried to install Debian; the partitioner wouldn't run. Just to get this machine back online, I threw in Fedora 27, which installed perfectly. I wonder if Trisquel 7 would have the same installation problems as 8 on UEFI machines? If the accessibility weren't so behind the times, I'd consider doing it.
