Although you and I find it easy to tweak desktop settings, it is not something a complete beginner should have to worry about.
I like Arc also! However I find that it makes menu fonts far less readable.
Xubuntu's Greybird theme seems like a nice halfway point between classic and
modern desktops. I think most people would feel comfortable with it.
