I know you said these are legacy computers, and I'm guessing the root  
partition is quite small? Unless you are desperately short of drive space,  
I've found a root partition of at least 15-20GB helps to avoid these kinds of  
space problems (unless there is another issue like cancerous growth of log  
files due to other errors).
