On GNOME Shell, that command *partially* works: on some regions of the  
interface (like the title bar of a window), the cursor remains small.  For  
MATE, it may not work at all but I think I found the proper key:
$ dconf write /org/mate/desktop/peripherals/mouse/cursor-size 32
