Thanks guys So I have gnome-player and vlc installed and they are fine.
I was sure I loaded gstreamer bad and ugly(I am on mini and they were not installed). However when I went back to check they weren't there, I am not sure if i took them out by accident. I tried many things so maybe another package took them out.
I am just about to do a full reinstall with Trisquel 8. Please don't worry about this. If totem should be able to play MP3 and MP4, then I will report back if it doesn't out of the box.
It's weird that we have totem but there is also gnome-Player as well and that it sounds like Gnome-Player is better and is not installed on Gnome by default...
