Thanks for reporting this bug. When the download server is not accessible, the update manager says: "Failed to download repository information. Check your Internet connection."
I tried to use the old, bad sources.list file, chose "Main server" in Software&Updates and it adjusted the sources file properly! I'll keep that in mind once something bad like this happens again.
