You can use both graphical and terminal applications.  Type Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or  
F2 or ... or F6) and you will get a text session.  You can go back to the  
graphical session with Alt+F7.  That said, I do not see much point, compared  
to a terminal emulator running in the graphical session.
