Audacity isn't the best program to troubleshoot with, because are situations  
in which it might not work even when audio is otherwise working.

Install mpv
$ sudo apt install mpv

and try to play an audio file from the command line

$ mpv /path/to/file

If you get errors, paste them here.

Also copy/paste the output of

$ lspci | grep Audio
