Try installing Lightning from  
https://addons.thunderbird.net/thunderbird/downloads/file/633791/lightning-5.4-sm+tb-linux.xpi  
(save the file and open it from the gear menu of the list of add-ons, in  
Icedove).

That is the latest version that is compatible with Thunderbird 52.* on  
https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2313/versions/  
(add-ons for a given version of Thunderbird are compatible with the same  
version of Icedove, which is Thunderbird rebranded).
