Similar concerns have been raised by many Ubuntu-based (non-free) distributions, such as Mint. Switching from Ubuntu to Debian as the base is a major step forward (to freedom). But switching to Debian doesn't resolve all freedom issues. For example, Debian still keeps non-official non-free repositories, and the information about introducing non-free firmware during installation can be easily found.

If Microsoft were purchasing Canonical, I'd like to appreciate it. Canonical's demise is much deserved. Countless damage have been done to software freedom by Canonical and Ubuntu.
