Can you be a little more specific about how it "breaks"? Does it just crash, or does it become glitchy in some other way? To troubleshoot, can you please open a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T, type "abiword", and press Enter? This will launch Abiword. While Abiword is running, reproduce the issue by deleting a character, and then look back at the terminal and see if any error messages appeared.
