I still do not understand why it has been necessary for the OP to change the
rights manually on the newly formatted disk if there has been no specific
options given to GParted (or to Gnome Disk, in my case).
I am glad that the problem was solved thanks to a better knowledge of access
right management but I have a feeling that it will keep occurring in similar
user cases. I have no recollection of similar problems almost a decade.
I will try to investigate on my 4GB disk and identify which options give
which results, using GParted and Disk. I am not familiar with the background
CLI commands for external disk management, though.
