no luck I am afraid. it does log me out and restarts the the display-manager  
but the issue still persists. no 'x' to quite an application. show desktop  
button has an error "your window manager does not support the show desktop  
button, or you are not running a window manager".

what causes this issue? I don't remember breaking the display-manager (on  
purpose).
