BOGOTA, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Colombia's Foreign Minister Maria Angela
Holguin on Thursday met eight young athletes who will be competing at the
London Olympics and serving the cause of promoting peace in their
violence-racked city and country.supra shoes
In a statement, the Colombian Foreign Ministry said the athletes, in addition
to standing out in several sports, "will be ambassadors in the British
capital of the importance of peace in Buenaventura and Colombia."
Promoting peace at the international event has its roots in the "Olympic
truce," when ancient Greeks called for the suspension of violence between
groups to ensure the games could be celebrated every four years, as they have
been since 1896, the ministry said.
The young athletes, all from the port city of Buenaventura on Colombia' s
Pacific coast, have pledged to return from the Olympics to "spread word of
their experience so that other youth will be inspired to build a fairer and
more humane world," the statement said.
At the London Games, running from July 27 to Aug. 12, more than 100 Colombian
athletes will compete in a variety of sports, including weightlifting and
cycling.
Colombia has attended six Olympics, winning 11 medals in all.
