I followed the steps you gave, and I still get the same error with undefined 
reference to

is pretty much the same:

git clone git://trousers.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/trousers/tpm-tools

cd tpm-tools

sh bootstrap.sh

# the CFLAGS option is to prevent error with gcc-4.6.x
env CFLAGS="-Wno-unused-but-set-variable" ./configure

make
