The utilities that come with the SW TPM don't use the TSS.  They were 
created before a TSS existed.  They're good for experimenting without 
writing any code.  That's why your tests worked.

If your application uses a TSS, then you need tcsd.  To start tcsd for a 
SW TPM, use

 >     # export TCSD_TCP_DEVICE_PORT=6543
 >     # /usr/sbin/tcsd -e -f
