This is more likely a function of your shell session and stty
definitions than trplayer.

When I use trplayer and it cannot reach a URL, a CTRL-X kills the
process and any child processes.

Do a stty and see how 'kill' is defined. If it isn't you
can set it to ^X from you .login or .profile  with stty
