Yes, there is. By default, the sound card is inaccessible. When, however, a
person logs in at the console, it becomes accessible to him. This takes care of
two problems. Firstly, it's not possible for a remote user to cause sounds of
unknown origin to be heard locally. Secondly, and more importantly, it's
impossible for a remote user to record what's happening locally, i.e. others
can't eaves drop on what goes on in the privacy of your home or office.
