I quite often use trplayer without a sound card - but with vsound:
/usr/bin/vsound -n -t -f rm20041217220001.au /usr/bin/trplayer -n -q -t 3609

I only needed to install dummy soundcard driver from alsa-driver-1.0.x.tar.bz2
