Blainer) The MAIN purpose of the garment is to cover one's
nakedness--to help insure modestly in the marriage relationship at all
times. The rule of thumb is that it be worn at all times, except to
bathe and change clothing. This is done in connection with covenants
relating to chastity--defined as no sex outside of marriage, but also
infers no lewdness in marriage. If one removes the garment permanently,
he/she disavows the importance of these serious covenants, and basically
rebels against God That's about it in a nutshell. Thanks for your
questions.

PS Some "Mormon" polygamous cults require their women to wear
leggings-style stockings, no makeup, no hair ornaments, and long dresses
with high collars. This probably promotes the same ideas as above, but
are frowned on by mainstream Mormons. Mainstream Mormons consider the
garment a sufficiant remind of the need for modesty and chastity.
