Vietnam - First to "hit the beach!"
It was June 2001, and a large crowd of people gathered outside the customs building for the arriving airplanes into Vietnam from America. Among them was a young woman nervously waiting and praying silently for the Lord's intervention. Soon the tourists began to emerge from the custom building. The woman began to quietly weep. To the people around her it seemed strange. She seemed to be weeping tears of joy and yet she had not seemed to greet any arrivals. As more and more "tourists" emerged she seemed to cry harder and smile broader.
Occasionally a "tourist" would pass close to her and she would utter a few words. What was she saying? "(Go straight behind me to the bus.)" Standing close to her you could hear her quietly whisper, "Thank you, Jesus." "Praise you, Father." To the onlooker it was very strange. What could be happening?
The woman was watching as the "troops" arrived with materials for battle. The Christian "soldiers" were crossing "undetected" by the border guards with their precious cargo of Scriptures. She could tell their suitcases were still bulging and very heavy. Her tears were for all the months of planning and praying for the materials to arrive. Now she was witnessing a miracle by God!
In every battle there are casualties and this time was no exception as two of the Christian "soldiers" (couriers) were stopped and their Scriptures confiscated. But, that was last year!
In a few days these Christian soldiers will advance again. They will engage in another spiritual battle to take God's Word into the Vietnamese people. But this time they will be the FIRST "marines" to "hit the beach" or "take the hill" so to speak. Let me explain: For many years the only Bible that has been available to carry into Vietnam was a translation that was originally taken from the King James version, translated into Chinese language and then translated into the main language of the 54 languages of Vietnam. There has never been a translation into the main Vietnamese language from the original Hebrew and Greek text.
For fourteen years translators have been working feverishly to provide a direct translation of the Bible for this nation. NOW IT IS COMPLETE! AND BIBLE COURIERS INTERNATIONAL HAS BEEN ASKED TO CARRY IN THE FIRST AMOUNT. What an honor! B.C.I. is delighted, thrilled, humbled, and very nervous to have been chosen by God for this honor. To think of being on the ground floor of the very first EVER fully translated from the original text Bile to be taken into a country is truly awesome! But we cannot do it alone! As in every war effort as the marines "hit the beach" they need the support "troops" to go before them and "bomb the beaches" with prayers. We need the border so bombarded with the heavenly forces that not one eye - X-ray or otherwise - will detect the precious cargo we will be carrying. Oft times the front troops suffer great casualties in a battle. This is a FIRST, and we will be that FRONT TROOP. WE NEED YOUR PRAYERS! We have listed dai ly prayers for you to follow our "movements" in our daily battle. They begin with our Day 1 and continue through our time into Vietnam and on into our mission into China. While in China we plan to make numerous border crossings. In China our battle will continue. AGAIN WE NEED YOUR PRAYERS! Stand by for further reports from the "front!" Please pray each day until the middle of November for the courier team members, Don, Marion, Deanna, Jeff, Scott, Tim, Nathan, Carol, Steve and Jessie.
Days 1 to 3 - We leave the USA on Friday night and arrive on Sunday morning in Vietnam. On one of our missions in Asia, we had head winds and had to land for extra fuel. We then missed our connecting flight. We took another flight into Thailand, waited more hours and finally arrived in Vietnam after being up 50 hours without rest. Pray: That we will have traveling mercies, and a safe and restful flight (we will try to sleep on the "red-eye" flight). Pray: There will be no bad weather, strong head winds, or turbulence during any of our flights.
Day 3 - Arrival in Vietnam... Pray: That we would not have to put our luggage on the X-ray machines and if we do go through X-ray, for temporary "blind eyes" of the border guards as they look at our luggage and us. They watch to see if foreigners look nervous. Pray: For confusion at the border to distract the guards so that we might pass unnoticed with all our Scriptures. Pray: For strength to carry the luggage. Each courier will have almost 150 pounds of luggage.
Day 4 - Orienting our team to Vietnam and making plans for deliveries. Pray: For safety for our contacts as they risk imprisonment to receive God's Word. Pray: For B.C.I. leadership as they move through the maze of decisions to deliver the Scriptures. Pray: For the weather to be over-cast and cool for our deliveries. It can be hot and humid.
Day 5 - Meet with contacts and experience all the sights, sounds and especially the people of Vietnam. Pray: For a quick turn-around from jet lag for the ten member team.
