Sued in the
Spirit
Loraine Daly, 40, is suing the Assemblies of God-affiliated
Waterloo church, the Sydney Christian Life Centre, arguing that the church
breached its duty of care that Sunday - August 8, 1996 when nobody caught her as
she fell backwards, as they call it in pentecostal circles, "slain in the
spirit." The unbiblical phenomenon has people fall uncontrollably backwards,
rather than foreward on their faces as the prophets did in reverence of God, as
if they left their own bodies. People are appointed by these churches as
"catchers" to prevent anyone from getting hurt in this ordeal but apparently
those men were unable to get to Ms Daly in time.
Ms Daly filed suit in
September for $380,000 and an additional $370,000 for other damages including
future loss of earnings for a total suit amount of $750,000. Daly claims
that she suffered brain damage from the fall, leaving her with disabilities
including headaches, nausea, memory loss, impaired concentration and a feeling
of vagueness. After hearing testimony that Daly possessed "an outstanding mental
capacity"and had "a photographic memory" before the fall, the court also heard
she was previously involved in two car accidents (1986 and 1993) which caused
similar symptoms in her abilities. The case is still in court.
