Izzy, that may be what you think a soul is, but what does God think a soul is? Maybe it has to do with self awareness...that is, not only do we humans think, but we know we think! (but some are the opposite...they think they know!) And I doubt that animals, even though they appear to express emotion, are aware of themselves. My dog is a big black beast, but I have never seen him in a contemplative pose. He just stares at my hands to see if I have a snack for him. No "ergo canis".

Now apes. They is another story...it is a bit eerie looking into their eyes, because you can SEE a higher intelligence than in a dog's eyes. But they still have no self awareness. They just want to eat bananas and sling doo doo. Cats are the strangest of all. Not only are they not self aware, but they could care less about it.

As far as why God might create a living thing to destroy it? Think food. Ever eat an animal? if so, then God created it to be destroyed...not by you, but by people YOU pay to destroy it so you can enjoy it.

Oh, maybe you are a vegetarian? Why would God create plants to be destroyed, After all, they are living things, too.

Think balance in the ecosystem. There is a clear food chain...and man is at the top, and bacteria are at the bottom...or is it the house fly...I forget. Come to think of it, do house flies have a soul? After all, they are animals, are they not? If they do not have souls, but dogs do, where is the cutoff? Maybe mice have souls but earthworms don't? How about? fish? Birds? Do they have souls? Maybe only mammels have souls. That's it. mammels. But wait. I like geckos. Can geckos have souls? In fact, I like reptiles in general. So, maybe reptiles have souls, too.

But, the bottom line is, if it makes one feel better to believe that Fluffy is going to heaven, I have no problem with that belief. By the time one gets to heaven one should be able to handel it if Fluffy is not there.

Okay, how do you "understand" our souls to be different from animals'? I
think a soul is intellect, emotions, and will: all of which animals have.
Isn't our soul that goes to heaven? Why would God create a living thing to
destroy it? I have the impression that God never destroys a life, once
created. For example, don't we believe that human souls live forever (either
UP or DOWN). So why wouldn't animal souls live forever? Izzy

Animals do not have souls as we understand the word. When they die it's the
end of the road. Either a stain on the pavement or a blob in the septic
tank, unless of course, you are a frog. In that case, there is always the
chance that you will end up a prince.

TT'ers, Hopefully you will be a bit more helpful with this question: What
happens to animal souls after they die? Izzy
