The phrase "Catholic Church" to most people means the "Roman Catholic Church." I just want to point out that the Roman Catholic Church really didn't come into being independently as its own denomination until 1054 A.D. So the "Catholic Church" organization that you allude to is improperly stated. There were many churches, not just one, who discussed what books should be considered as part of the Canon of Scripture. They excluded many books with very good reason. There were lots of Joseph Smith like con men around, writing things which were not divinely inspired. Anyone who reads these other writings will see the distinction. There are some books that occupy that gray area of possible inclusion in that they were not the works of con men, but valuable and helpful spiritual or historical works. However, we must trust that God in his work of Providence has made the Bible what it is. This does not mean that God's Word does not also exist outside the Bible. It most certainly does. But the Bible alone holds a place of authority by which other revelations may be judged. No "Catholic Church" compiled the Bible as you imply. God in his work of Providence compiled the Bible, working over many generations in a way that no man could. Peace be with you.
