Good question, Terry. Yes, most of the
translations have this word translated as either Redeemer or Kinsmen
Redeemer, or redeemer, kinsmen redeemer, lower case (Some of the more
liberal translations do whatever they can to diminish anything that
might appear to be prophetic). And this is not to say that go'el is the
only word that these translations translate as Redeemer; some of the
translations use others. But this word carries with it the idea of
kindred or kinship. Even in the passages that identify Yahweh as go'el, they
do so in the context of the Holy One of Israel or to the King of Israel or
the Mighty One of Jacob, or something similar, all clearly prophetic in that
they anticipate the Christ, calling him at the same time Yahweh. I think
this is probably why throughout the OT, if you follow the line of Eve
through Seth and onward, you see a concerted effort on the part of the evil
one to destroy the bloodline leading up to the birth of Immanuel. It is
really quite fascinating.
