Blaine: The Shroud of Turin indicates the man whose negative image is shown on the Shroud received over 100 stripes with the scourge. Whoever's image is on the shroud was apparently almost beaten to death. Perhaps Mel Gibson's portrayal of the bloody beating of Christ was not so much overdone after all...
A friend of mine told me that an OT prophecy of the murder said that the Christ was (would be) unrecognizeable because of the beatings. I don't have the scripture but intend to find.
