Unless I misunderstand, I do not think John is ascribing evil motives to Avraham. Avraham, a righteous man, clearly made a bad judgment call in the text (clear, at least in my reading) and the end result, if God allowed it to continue, would be adultery... after all the text makes it clear that even at her age, she was a remarkable beautiful woman... not a great cook.
