... it is far more effective and Christian to die in that opposition a martyr (witness), as Telemachus did, than it is to die a warrior (rebel).
We agree very much on this, Bill. I have anti-abortion acquaintances who believe we should kill abortionists for God. They think Paul Hill was a martyr for Christ and a great man of God. I have quoted Romans 13 to them so many times for why they are wrong that many of them think I am a hopeless pacifist and coward.
Furthermore, I have practiced the very things you talk about in not resisting arrest, not resisting evil, etc. I was once hit with a baseball bat on the back of my head. It knocked me out momentarily, because all I remember was waking up looking at a man standing over me with the baseball bat in his hand. I arose and told him I forgave him and blessed him in Jesus name. These were not just words. I loved the man greatly in my heart. He was confused and did not know what he was doing. He dropped the bat with a look of shock on his face as I reached my hand out to shake his and tell him that God loved him and that I forgave him. I have cooperated with the police so much so that some of the more devisive type of street preachers accused me of conspiring with the police and being too chummy with them. When I was arrested once in Tampa and charged with "advocacy without a permit," there was quite a chatter in the police department because they all knew who I was already and surely hoped to avoid that step. I did not resist being arrested, but let the officer put the handcuffs on and I cooperated in getting into the police car and everything they would ask. The Lord later cleared me of all charges and the law under which I was arrested was rendered null and void. In other words, my standing up for what was right in this case resulted in greater freedom and liberty for the people of Tampa. I do not regret doing that one bit.
Peace be with you.
David Miller.
