I
understand where you're coming from, but you are dong what we call throwing
the baby out with the bathwater, aren't you? There are some bad commentaries
out there and there are sorry contemporary scholars, as you called
them. That doesn't mean all contemporary scholars are terrible. There are
others who also listen to the Spirit of the Holy One. We must never forget
that we do not hold the monopoly on the Shekhinah... nor do we even hold the
Lion's Share.
As
far as wrangling with words, we wrangle with words because we must. Languages
change and correlations between the ancient writings on one language (in this
instance Hebrew and Greek) cannot and do not hold constant correlations with
another language. (For instance, "Let" in the original KJV did not mean
"permit;" it meant the exact opposite.) to me, wrangling with words is like
arguing the definition of "is" or something like that. Perhaps even arguing ad
nauseum over the definition of "One."
For
those who do not want to explore the Hebrew or Greek grammar are forever (in
this lifetime) destined to have a mediator between themselves and the original
texts (this mediator being a translator). I encourage all who will hear to get
the tools (and the talents) necessary to remove this mediator to the best of
their ability.
