Attacks and slurs often are referenced in fallacies such as Ad Hominem and appeal to ridicule.

Why do so many people resort to ad hominem attacks?

Is it that they are incapable of arguing the merits of something?

Is it that they are unwilling to do so?

Is it that they just like to provoke people?
