Real questions are much more than retorts. When was the last time someone said something to you with which you disagreed then, following some give and take, assisted you to see that there is more to Him than your tightly woven system allows for?

jt: Please tell me you are joking Caroline, or does God's Word have no integrity whatsoever in your eyes?

Caroline: I agree with JD in that sometimes people say things in the heat of the moment that might not be all that well thought out.

jt: Then it is apparent that neither you or JD understand how the "inspiration of the Holy Spirit" works in the mouths of the prophets.

Caroline: One example is Stephen in Acts 7:4 when he said Abraham left Haran after his father's death. In Genesis, his father was still alive when Abraham left. Perhaps Stephen mis-remembered a minor detail. Perhaps someone taught him wrong. But give the guy a break, he was about to be stoned!

jt: This is not an example of anything. Abram was born in Ur of the Chaldees (Babylonia); when he left his father Terah, his nephew Lot and wife Sarai all went with him.  They travelled toward Canaan eventually settling north of Canaan in Haran which is in the land of Assyria (Persia today) and settled there. Terah died in Haran after which Abram, Lot and Sarai moved on again.  So no problem Stephen is right on. Terah was alive when they left Ur of the Chaldees and dead when they left Haran.  The Holy Spirit does not inspire error.

Caroline: Does it really matter?

jt: Of course it matters. "Let God be true and every man a liar"

Caroline: No! if it's about a relationship with our Triune God, who are real, alive, persons.

jt: Are you following three Gods Caroline?

Caroline: Why did God inspire Luke to write it that way?

jt: Because this is how it happened and Luke was recording what the Holy Spirit brought back to his remembrance...

Caroline: It's so easily checkable. Because our faith is in Him, the living God who speaks. Because Jesus is the truth, the way and the life.

jt: Are you saying that perceived errors in scripture can be checked by someone who speaks to you Caroline?

Caroline: Close your eyes...a Torrance reference is coming up. Torrance wrote a book explaining carefully that some thing are symbols and signs that point to the real thing. They are not the real thing. They help us find and understand the real thing. A map shows us the city in a way we can understand but it is not the city. The bible, which I love and study, is not the Word. The Word (logos) is the Second Person of the Trinity, Christ Jesus.

jt: The Logos (or dead letter) can kill - It is the Spirit who gives life and the Rhema or "revealed Word" is the Word of Christ -  The Lord is that Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty.
