I sometimes argue against it just to emphasize that in my opinion, it has flaws--but I consider it the word of God for the most part. In answer to your very excellent question (thanks for keeping it simple), I believe the Lord started the Mormon Church for one main reason--orderliness. In other words, I think He wants the Church to be one, with no divisions in doctrine, authority or practice. He is a God of order, not disorder, and I think anyone who takes even a brief look at the traditional Christian world would of necessity be constrained to agree that there is much disorder in lines of authority, practices and doctrine. The Book of Mormon presents itself as containing the old gospel of Jesus and his disciples in pure form, as it was taught by Jesus Christ to his disciples in the New World, when he visited them shortly after his ascension from his Old World disciples. Many other revelations to Joseph Smith further clarified how Christ's Church should be conducted in these last days. In summary, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was established for the purpose of preparing a House of Order with purity of doctrine, authority and practices, in p reparation for the second coming of Christ, in much the same way as John the Baptist was to be the forerunner of the Messiah in ancient times.
