Here is how Bible correctors work:

God says Gen 2:16-17 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

SATAN Questions & then misquotes just 1/3 of  the verse Gen 2:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Eve SUBTRACTS "freely" in verse 2 then ADDS in vs 3 to God's word, next thing you know she is changing "thou shalt surely die" to "lest you die" 3:3 : 2) And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3) But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. see Gen 2:17

Satan calls God a liar 3:4 "ye shall not surely die"

EVE clarifies & improves the text, relying on the context, cultural understanding & the latest Modern Scholarship, to give us a better translation:. By the time satan was done with her she did not know what God said anymore.

SEE  Balaam for more of the same.

If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak?

Did he?

2 Co 2:17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

2 Co 4:2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

Who is the leader?

He is a master misquoter, a sower of Doubt, by the time he was finished with Eve she could not quote God's words correctly and the rest is history.

Caroline, they had the scriptures; the NT is hidden in the old and the OT is revealed in the new.  In case you haven't heard there
is a war going on and it is a war against God's Word; we have an adversary a mind jumbler if you will.  It's not a matter of perfect
theology - it's a matter of apprehending the Truth as it is in Christ Jesus because it is in Him that we either stand or fall.  It's either a pure heart of faith in God's Word or an evil heart of unbelief.  Theologians are expendable.  jt

After Jesus Christ ascended and within one generation, all that they were taught in the OT will change. They didn't have the New Testament. They were living and working it out. Paul said they didn't need anyone to teach them, they had the spirit of Christ within them. But misunderstanding and bad thinking dogged Paul's ministry. He wrote his letters to rebuke people or correct bad theology or answer basic questions of life. Error in theology will continue to dog Christianity for 2000 years. Having the bible is no guarantee of 100% Truth. Nor is having the bible AND the Holy Spirit. All the great theologians have errors in their theology. Some like John Stott change major ones as they mature in the faith. He no longer believes the suffering in hell is eternal.
