This is a post by Caroline on another email group she is in. I thought
you may find it interesting:

Hi Matt;

You'll find the chapter where McLaren talks about God saving by judging

very

interesting. I think he is reacting against a certain teaching we've had
regarding what Jesus accomplished on the cross and salvation etc.

I was at a seminar today, (Victor Shepherd on Paul Molnar's "Divine

Freedom

and the Doctrine of the Immanent Trinity") and at one point Shepherd
declared Arianism is the worse of Docetism and Ebionitism and the church

is

90% of the time Arian. We were like huh? until a brave soul asked in Q&A
what he meant. He said Docetism is saying Christ Jesus is more God than

man

and Ebrionitism is saying Jesus Christ is more man than God. Arianism is
saying he is a third kind of category, neither God nor man but something
above man but below God.

Capturing the right Christology is a daunting task. Everything has to be
wrung through the Chalcedonian Creed. So here's my two bit attempt on

John

3:16. When Christ died and rose again, we all died and rose with him.

His

death atoned for the sins of all mankind. But even though he has
accomplished the reconciliation, some men will refuse to reconcile with

him.

However, we're to value each person as God has valued them and leave

final

destiny to God's judgment. While we're here, there are no IN/OUT

categories

but a continuum from those who have the fullness of Christ dwelling in

them

and those who have fully rejected Christ and we are to deal with one and

all

wisely in love. The warnings in John 3 are to leave darkness and death

and

follow Christ. We're not suppose to use it to figure out who's in and

who's

out. I think that's Abbott and Costello's job.

Love,

Caroline
