Blaine, are you aware that "born of water" in v. 5 means physical birth? The context could not be more clear. Check out John 3:6. Jesus explains verse 5 for us. That is that we must be physically born AND be spiritually born. In fact, both vs. 5 and 6 are in response to Nicodemus' question about being physically born, as he confused physical and spiritual birth!
