Subject: flying kites with glass string
Yesterday at my mom's suggestion she and I took Luke and Aaron to Basant, the Pakistani kiteflying festival held in Erindale Park. (Carolyn Parrish, who was there and had organized it, said it was the first time it had been done here--she got the idea for it while visiting Pakistan in February.) It was the perfect day for kiteflying, fair but with enough clouds that you could look up at the sky without getting blinded, and with a good stiff breeze blowing. Since kites had been imported from Pakistan for the occasion, we decided not to take our own but to get one there in case they turned out to be interesting.
We did, we bought two colourful paper kites there very cheaply, but THEN we discovered that everybody (including both adults and kids) ONLY does competitive kiteflying at this festival, so there was no other string for sale except the kind with tiny glass particles, designed to cut the strings of other people's kites so they fall out of the sky. This string can cut your hands, so there was also tape available for taping the cuts on your fingers and palms. ("If Hazel M knew how dangerous this string was, she'd have it around my neck," said Parrish.) We decided not to try that, especially since the kiteseller was at great pains to warn us how badly you could be cut if you were a novice. Indeed, we did see a few people with their hands all bleeding, and most others had bits of tape everywhere. But, um, I'm sure it's fun if you know what you're doing! Perfect analogy for TT!!
We did watch for a while, though. There were some unusual kites--one looked just like a real eagle--and the people were getting them so high they were just tiny shapes up there in the blue and it didn't seem possible they were attached to the earth in any way at all. A few people were doing tricks with their kites. We did see a few come down after being cut, and lots of garbage cans full of trashed kites. It was all pretty interesting and impressive for people like us whose kiteflying technique is only marginally better than Charlie Brown's. If today is an equally good kite day, we will go to the local park here in Georgetown and try to fly these new ones...

Thanks for this. I had an off-list conversation with Terry just before leaving TT, which I think helped put me in his not-quite-so-bad books. It seems he thinks there is hope for me; hmmm, given the source, is that complimentary, I wonder?Terry reminds me a little of you there in his last paragraph--he doesn't take himself too seriously, and I've always liked that. Not a bad chap, even if he does make guns. :-)I hope you had a good trip to Windsor and back with your 130 hours worth of audio. Does Bev accompany you on these trips, and if so does she have an equal appreciation for such audio blitzes? The roof is about three-quarters finished here; should be done by dark. We are thankful it didn't rain last night.D----- Original Message -----From: Lance MuirTo: Debbie SawczakSent: Sunday, May 22, 2005 3:14 PMSubject: Fw: [Bulk] Re: [Bulk] Re: [TruthTalk] Where have all the non-fundies gone save (excepting)----- Original Message -----From: Terry CliftonSent: May 22, 2005 15:04Subject: [Bulk] Re: [Bulk] Re: [TruthTalk] Where have all the non-fundies gone save (excepting)Lance Muir wrote:I think both young ladies are very intelligent using the world's standard to measure such. Just to mention Caroline and Debbie, is that what you really thought of what they had to say?
But then, what do I know? Us dottering old relics just like to make an occasional comment between wheezes. My advice is to ignore me or you'll get an ulcer.
