Rather, as Edwards phrased it in his notes on "The Mind":  "That which truly is the substance of all bodies is the infinitely exact and precise and perfectly stable idea in God's mind, together with his stable will that the same shall gradually be communicated to us, and to other minds, according to certain fixed and exact established methods and laws."

jt: The mind of God and the mind of Christ are one and the same for He said "If you have seen me you have seen the Father"

EDWARDS SAID:
"As God delights in his own beauty, he must necessarily delight in the creature's holiness which is a conformity to and participation of it, as truly as (the) brightness of a jewel, held in the sun's beams, is a participation or derivation of the sun'" "There are two sorts of hypocrites: ones that are deceived with their outward morality and external religion; and the others are those that are deceived with false discoveries and elevation; which often cry down works, and men's own righteousness"

jt:  Man looks at the outward appearance - God looks upon the heart. Holiness/hypocrisy are issues of the heart.

I have the book right here at the house JD; and I believe he was a well meaning, good, and honorable man.
No problem there.  However, he is not the fount of all truth.  To begin with he is a Calvinist and very legalistic (which should be a concern for you JD).  I don't reject Jonathan Edwards but it is dangerous to look for truth through a grid of his doctrine.  jt
