John, what you say is clear. It brings to mind a book I have called "The
Seven laws of Noah". It introduces the idea of the "Noahide" law, the law
given to Noah as part of the Noahic covenant (which we know is real from Gen
9, but may not have all of the details of it in scripture) that applied to
all men until the Mosaic covenant, and after the Mosaic covenant, applied to
(and according to the rabbinic sources in the book still applies to)
gentiles today. Of course, we Christians are under the new covenant, so the
Noahide law would not apply to us today. This law would have covered the
"other 90%" to which you refer.
The book says that while the Jews had 632 laws that they were to follow,
and the ten commandments, that the gentiles were required to follow a subset
of the 632, and only 7 (the seven laws of noah) of what became the 10
commandments. It is itneresting to note the differences bewteen the Mosaic
and Noahide laws.
One interesting aside from the book is that converts to Judaism are
discouraged simply because it is easier to be a good gentile than a good
jew!

A Heuristic Consideration
The scriptures I have seen used to support the Law are scriptures written
to and for and by the Jews on that subject. The Law is a late date
administration coming hundreds if not thousands of years after the creation
event. When it was presented to "mankind," it was given to an extremely
small part of "mankind." The Old Testament is not the story (IMO) of
the people of God verses the condemned. Rather, it is the story of the
people of God AS DEFINED BY THE MOSICAL COVENANT exclusive of any other
anthropological consideration. There is no reason to believe that the
rest of mankind is lost and hell bound because they were not Jewish. In
fact, in Romans 2 gives us a little insight into just how things may have
worked for the 90% of humanity who were never given the Law. Paul makes it
clear (I believe) that the purpose of the Law was best seen in the fact
that it served as a tutor until the coming of Christ................. who,
in turn, reconciled the 10% (the Jew) with the 90% (everyone else on
earth).
Perhaps I have not stated things as accurately as I might - being a
pastor and not a theologian. But the above needs to be considered as we
formulate our opinions on The Law.

How many times must we post scriptures that explain that God?s law is the
Bible, cover to cover, and will never pass away? Or that Jesus told us
that if we love Him we will obey His law? Etc. Etc. Etc. I won?t waste my
times posting it all or quoting it all again. Our righteousness in Christ
never nullified or vilified God?s law. Don?t trash what God loves. This
admonition is for those who have ears to hear. Izzy

The following is the substantive part of the post: Whenever you call God?s
law a garbage dump you heap judgment on yourself. First, I do not see
Linda Shield's characterization of G's wording, but that aside, the
view I have of scripture regarding The Law is this: it was given to the
Jews and to the Jews only -- never was it intended to be that by which the
larger community of man was to be judged. It was fulfilled by a Jew
bearing the essence of an incarnate God and in this fulfillment, taken out
of consideration -- if we are dealing with the issue of "that which
judges man." In the grace of God and His tender mercies, we are
"judged" in Christ and that judgment presents us "right eous" before the
Father. Good news, indeed !!!

If God is convicting you personallyabout your part in this I can appreciate
that and you will find no condemnation from me. However, I would very much
appreciate you giving the rest of us the same consideration because it is
the work of the Holy Spirit to convict of sin, righteousness, and the
judgment to come.
