Style Guide - The Name of the Church

The official name of the Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This full name was given by revelation from God to Joseph Smith in 1873

When writing about the Church, please follow these guidelines:

  • Please avoid the use of “Mormon Church,” “LDS Church” or “the Church of the Latter-day Saints.”
  • When referring to people or organizations that practice polygamy, the terms “Mormons,” “Mormon fundamentalist,” “Mormon dissidents,” etc. are incorrect. The Associated Press Stylebook notes: “The term Mormon is not properly applied to the other ... churches that resulted from the split after [Joseph] Smith’s death.”
  •
    Here is a Good oNe
  • When a shortened reference is needed, the terms “the Church” or “the Church of Jesus Christ” are encouraged.

  • AND WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T TALK DURING THE PRAYERS AT OUTDOOR Mormon PAGEANTS

I am a little confused here Blaine.  I agree that Mormon should be capitalized, but why would you expect Perry to show respect for your religeon when he has repeatedly said that it is a cult?  Would that not be hypocritical on his part?

Blaine:  Using  English conventions when using the English language is always appropriate, but refusing to use these conventions when addressing others is an obvious attempt to bash.  If Perry insists on doing that, I regret to say I cannot hear anything he says, because what he does speaks so loudly.  He is entitled to his  opinion that Mormons are members of a cult, but he is not entitled to denigrate individuals by using slurs intended to denigrate an entire group of individuals, myself included.  Refusing the accepted convention of capitalizing "mormon" is tantamount to saying "nigger" as a substutute for "Black."  I have noticed people who use the word "nigger" in their writing often don't capitalize it, either.

Ah so, I did not know you were a n, uh, black.  Is black a proper noun?  How 'bout white, or yellow? :)
