That person who wrote Genesis 15 was Moses, and yes, I think he did understand that it was Jesus Christ. Why doubt that Moses wrote it, and why doubt that Moses knew Jesus Christ face to face? Read John 8:56 for some insight into how Abraham knew of Christ and his day. Living long ago did not mean they were completely without insight into the future. They experienced the revelation of God.
