DAVEH: Do you not find it interesting that some used *the words of God's holy prophets *to try to entrap our Lord?

You will have to give me a few scriptural examples here, Dave. I am not sure what you are alluding to.

Perry also wrote (referring ot the mormons): but were duped into following a false religion,

*DAVEH: And what do you think *duped into following a false religion*, Perry? Was it due to their inattention to Scripture? Or....do you think they failed to recognize true prophets, and listen to them?

I think the early mormons were lured by many things. Their inattention to scripture may have played a role, especially the warnings about wolves in sheep's clothing and watching out for anti-christs and false prophets.

Also at the time the Masons, and secret societies in general, were getting a lot of bad press, which tends to add to the mistique of such organizations, so the thought of having esoteric knowledge (the tablets) that so few have was quite alluring to them.

Additionally, as I am learning from a book I am reading, in the early 1800s a lot of pre-columbian burial mounds were being excavated and inscribed stones being found, so it makes sense that JS' story about gold tablets being found, although a much more fantastic story than the simple inscribed stones being found at the time, would fit into their world view, giving seeming credibility to his fabriction.

And, finally, we cannot forget the charismatic nature of JS as well as the influence of Satan and the occult in his early life (the book I am reading also points out that JS and couple of his colleagues rented a room in Salem, MA, in order to divine buried treasures he believed were there. This occurred AFTER the plates were supposedly translated, AFTER he started the mormon church, and AFTER he was called "prophet". This verifies his continued occult activity, as does the Jupiter talisman found in his possession at his death.)

By the way, the book also gives JS's lineage back to the Salem witch trials, in which some of his ancestors were involved in the trials. This book is not about mormonism...it is about evil in America...I did not even know there was a mormon element to this book when I bought it...but it is interesting that in the book JS's occultic practices play into it. The author also points out the Arthur Conan Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes story, "A Study in Scarlet", plays on the negative perception of the mormon church prevelent at the time the story was penned. Have you read it?
