Darkness , in this passage, is NOT sin, Dean because "sin" in this passage is something you possess and to deny this makes you a liar -- verse 8 of I John 1 tells us this.
I gave you an exegetical preview and you gave me your static opinion with no regard to the exegetical. Obviously, you will believe what you will but never say that your opponents have no scripture.
In I John 1:6-8 neither "light" nor "darkness" speak of sin. Rather, they describe a relationship with God or that lack thereof.
You beleive that the cross only forgave past sin and the phrase "once and for all time" is limited to that -- past time. Your gospel offers no hope for the addicted. It is a gospel of hopelessness .
