The friend giving us the car is the one who gave Jan Dom Crossan's biography of Jesus. We went out to get the car this afternoon and ended up in a discussion about literalism and historicity. I was trying to make the point that not all scripture is one kind of writing, and also that literalness is not the same as historicity. I think treating all scripture the same contributes to the house-of-cards mentality. Our friend's apprehension of Christ is not rooted in space and time at all, but he thinks the essential truth of the gospels is independent of that. For us, of course, that IS the essential truth--God entering space and time as a man. It was a good and amiable conversation. 

 

Anyway, I was reflecting later how the conversation confirmed that our unbelieving friend on the one hand and fundamentalists on the other are really operating out of the same rationalistic paradigm. That's why they both have a house of cards, only one is out to preserve it and the other is out to demolish it (albeit not maliciously). And I saw how, to fundamentalists, anyone who suggests any latitude at all in interpreting the Bible would sound like an unbeliever.
