No it doesn't, product link is optional
you can enter lines with free description, nevertheless, using a set of
generic products can ease accounting and tax parameters and reporting.

Imho, the more your business is complex between it doesn't follow strict
rules, the more you need software to keep it under control.

I don't think so. I don't resell anything and don't use inventory. I use
generic products (training, consulting, hosting) so when I create a
line, it sets automatically taxes, units and so on, and I customize the
description for each line.
