[tryton] what is the simplest way to test changes on the code?

Hello, 

actually i try to develeop an own module and customize some other modules. 
But i donk know the best and simplest way to test the changes i made. 
I am trying to update the database with trytond -d database -u module 
restart the server and upgrade the module in tryton. 
But this mostly don't work. If i initialize a new database and install the 
modul the changas are visible. 
So waht ist the best way to test changes?
