you have two options ... use screen package so you can detach your session logout and reattach lately.. or use lftp package that support background ftp jobs (it support sftp and ssl ftp too so is a nice client) ...
you ca get package in Trustix Contrib area ..or at tsl.chung.li ...

Is there some way, how to run command like in background, disconnect from ssh and then log back and return to that command?
