So changing kernel tricked it to work?

One thing I can say for sure is that this had nothing to do with the
kernel. :)

The only logical explanation was that the rpm database was in some way
corrupt, and that it got fixed by accident when you played with the
kernel installs.

The database is the same for rpm and swup, and I wonder if not a 'rpm
--rebuilddb' would have helped..
