I now realized the solution to my problem. Looking at the source code for mailx revealed that mailx invokes sendmail. Sendmail is part of the postfix package. Thus, that solves the problem.

Anyway, the sendmail you are referign to is just a postfix executable that is sendmail compatible (and goes by the name 'sendmail' :-) This is because a lot of programs depend on a 'sendmail' executable to send email. (This is at least what I've been told (and what I've read))
