I am interested in knowing about doing a PPPoE setup (I might just
google howto's, but any pointers would be handy). However I think I
will just use a shell script ran from rc.local full of rules for my
iptables since that way I learn to do something new, and learn the
iptables command line (which I should have learned years ago anyway).

Have you considered setting the router as "normal" router (to do the ppp connection) and use the routers internal config to point all incoming ports to the linux machine? Usually such a setting is called DMZ host or default server in the routers config interface, so you have a kind of half-bridge.

In this case you won't have the linux machine do make the connection and the
result is almost the same. I really don't use ppp and bridging routers
anymore,
only on old DSL modems who can't make a standalone connection.
